    Not even an interpretation of ancient writings. Some chap thought that, because the Mayans believed that the last couple of incarnations of the universe were destroyed at the beginning of their 13th B’ak’tun, they must have thought that the same would happen to this one.

    There was no prediction about this date in any sort of Mayan writings, nor were there any reasons to suspect that they thought the world was going to end afterwards. Indeed, they had calendars which went beyond this date and marked out future important events in their culture (such as anniversaries of events).

    Just goes to show that even the smallest bit of misinformation or misunderstanding that catches the imagination of the public can suddenly become incredibly popular and believed by many, even though there is nothing to back it up…

      Still an interpretation of the writings that weren’t… 🙂

      Someone took something and interpreted it in a way that it wasn’t intended…

      Hard to imagine that happening in modern society… 🙂
