God and Son

Poking the bloated corpse of religion with a pointy stick to hear it fart.

It’s Raining Men…

on May 9, 2012

What is it with Atheists who won’t sing hymns, yet will happily drunkenly sing Right Said Fred ‘Too Sexy‘ when they aren’t a model…. or even slightly too sexy for their hat, or RATM’s ‘Killing in the Name Of” when they aren’t about to rebel, but would rather have a biscuit and a cup of tea?

It’s just a song. Sing it. Heck, some of those tunes are really well written…. Yeah, dodgy lyrics, but still…. full of power and feeling musically.

They’re just words. You can sing them without believing them.

Do you really have so little faith in your non belief, that you fear a little sing song?

Are you worried you’ll turn all religious?

It’s about context and occasion…. I for one wouldn’t sing a religious based song if it was being used as a call to arms for a religious uprising, or had some religious undertone … but when it is harmless, and it would be offensive or hurtful to not sing, then what have you got to lose? You’re not going to offend your God…. 😉

Let’s face it… Church marriages are traditional, and hymns must be sung…. but I bet that in a great deal of these weddings, that no-one really gives a crap about the religion. They are all about the love and the wedding… the celebration and the occasion. Like Christmas with kids.

I like a lot of hymns- some are dire or twee, but others are lots of fun to sing. And I used to be in choirs and sang a number of Requiem Masses, which I love. Latin is marvelous set to music!
    And no, I’m not Christian.
(Pagan, in fact, And most pagan songs are REALLY dire and twee….)
